Winter Pests

Winter is fast approaching, and so are those pesky pests that come with it! With the nights drawing in and the temperatures dropping it’s a sign that you need to start thinking about how you are going to keep all the winter pests from seeking shelter in your home or business. When the summer months end you might be tempted to take a sigh of relief thinking that all your pest problems are solved, at least until summer is back anyway! But the truth of it is there are a whole new set of pests that are about to start entering your home or business to seek out food and shelter, these range from small insects such as spiders to larger rodents such as rats and mice! Rodents especially, will be on the hunt for a nice warm place to take shelter, build nests and close to a good food source for the winter months. The pest thing you can do to avoid these pests this winter is to ensure there is no way of them getting into your home in the first place. Below our team at STP Pest Control have put together a handy guide an what you can to pest proof your home this winter.

Check Outside Your Property – Have a walk around your property and do a thorough check to see if there are any cracks or holes around your property pests may be able to enter through. Both rats and mice can squeeze through the smallest of openings so ensure you seal off any thing you notice.

Inspect the Garden – Most pests including rats and mice like to find somewhere sheltered to build their nests, so you should check around your garden for any potential nesting sites such as, sheds, piles of firewood and other such places. If you do see evidence of a mouse or rats’ nest, then it is best to try and remove them now before they decide to move into your home for the winter.

Keep on Top of Housework – Pests aren’t just looking for warms when they invade a property, they are also looking for a good food source. So, if you keep your home clean and clutter free these pests won’t have a place to build a nest and they also won’t have easy access to food.

Firewood – If you have a log burner or outdoor heater that requires logs you should carefully consider where you store your wood. The best place would be inside your home but if this isn’t possible try and store it at least 20ft from your property to try and prevent the pests from entering your home.

Infestations – Keep an eye out for signs of an infestation, if you spot droppings, greasy marks, gnaw marks or chewed up materials then the likelihood is that you have a rodent infestation. You should contact your local pest control expert as soon as you notice any of these signs so the issue can be dealt with immediately. The longer you leave an infestation the worse it will become especially in cases with rats and mice because 2 can become 100 in a matter of weeks! Also, by catching an infestation early you could save yourself some hefty repairs bills.
